No Slow Summer Here
It’s been an exciting summer at FPA San Diego. We had two great events in July:
A Day at the Races, an event we held to thank our members. This was a lot of fun and featured great food and drinks, networking and great betting action! It was held in our own private room overlooking the Del Mar Race Track, with betting stations right in the room and our own handicapper. We had a prize drawing, and the lucky winners also got to be part of the winner’s circle presentation for the eighth race, which was named after FPA San Diego. A great time was had by all!
A networking mixer jointly held by us and the San Diego County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. This was a very fun event held at the Melting Pot in the Gaslamp Quarter. It was a great chance to form relationships with attorneys as they grow their practices.
Our next quarterly education meeting will be on September 8th. We will have some very timely presentations- a discussion of Health Care reform, and a regional/ national economic update from Dr. Ismael Adibi. Plus we’ll have a bonus presentation on delivering Pro Bono financial advice.
BIG PLANS FOR 2010
Your FPA San Diego Board of Directors held a Mid-Year Strategic Planning Update to conduct a “progress check” on the chapter for the year. The good news is that our chapter is as vibrant as ever and we are hard at work toward meeting the goals we established this year. The bar is high and there’s a lot to do.
Plans are shaping up for National Financial Planning Week. This year, the FPA of San Diego is ramping up for a major impact on the community by offering a number of programs, Public Relations opportunities, and other activities and events to mark this year’s NFP week. Among the plans for this year are:
- Opportunities for authoring articles and financial planning content.
- Exposure on many types of media: TV, internet, print, radio.
- Participation in local seminars and other educational events
In short, we are making a major push to educate the public on the benefits of financial planning and we will be providing resources to our community. Stay tuned as we roll out these programs as there will be opportunities for everyone to get involved.
TIME TO MOBILIZE
Now that the 2,300 page Financial Reform Bill has been signed into law, the great wheels of government bureaucracy are winding up. Most of the actual rules are yet to be written, and will be authored by the same regulators that failed to head off the crisis. Will they go too far, or not far enough? Will the big lobbies succeed in influencing the rules, so they can continue to capitalize on consumer confusion about financial products and advice?
In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be mobilizing to increase public awareness of the issues, while helping to put pressure on the lawmakers to step up and protect consumers. We need you to make it work. If you are interested in getting out there and educating consumers, talking with the media, and talking with lawmakers, click on the GET INVOLVED!section of this web site.
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU
This is your organization, and the board exists to serve you. What do you want from your chapter? Let us know in an e-mail, a phone call, or on a survey. And if you can, please don’t miss out on the opportunity to join a committee. Check out the GET INVOLVED! section of this web site. I hope you have a wonderful August. I look forward to hearing from you or seeing you at our next quarterly education meeting or community outreach event.
Warm Regards,
